29th May 2022 – Easter 7 All Saints Church, Childwall
Read: Philippians 2:5-10
5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death – even death on a cross!
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth…
Reflect: The 10 days between Ascension Day and Pentecost are like an extended Easter Saturday. Something has happened and as a consequence something else is going to happen and while we wait we are encouraged to pray.
But what difference does the Ascension of Jesus make? This passage in Philippians helps us to understand. The Name of Jesus is key, it is the name the angel told Joseph to call the baby Mary was carrying. Jesus means God saves, so the purpose of his life and ministry was determined before he was born. We learn here and in John’s Gospel that this baby is God and came to rescue our fallen race. Jesus lived a full and perfect life which culminated in the powerful Easter events which conquered sin, defeated death and brought us back to God.
Following His resurrection, Jesus appeared to his disciples on a number of occasions over a period of 40 days. He then ascended from the Mount of Olives, and returned to heaven but he took with him the Name – Jesus and all that he had accomplished during his earthly life.
Our passage tells us that he is now enthroned in the highest place and is Lord over heaven and earth. His name (Jesus) is higher than any other and one day the whole of creation will join in heavens song praising Jesus for his wonderful salvation.
Respond: This privilege is ours today, we can join in heavens song now. Will you take time this week to meet with a friend and join the disciples in praising God for the victory of Jesus and wait with them for the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
Pray: Lord Jesus help me to worship you in spirit, truth, and thankfulness for your finished work. Garry Critchley (Reader at All Saints)

Children will enjoy hot or cold drinks, snacks and a variety of different learning sessions, including some based in the church hall, church hall garden the churchyard and spire. Each session will be inclusive, fun and designed to make our young people think about their faith, its application to their own lives and their place in the world. We also want our young people to lead some of the Boulders work and will challenge them to take up roles within the church that add to our sense of community and access for all.
