10th April 2022 All Saints Church, Childwall
Read: Luke 19: 28-40 – Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King
28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’” 32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.” 35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. 37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
Reflect:
Jesus decides to go to Jerusalem during the feast of Passover. The Passover was arguably the most volatile and political gathering that would occur. The Passover reminds Hebrews of their liberation from Egyptian oppression. On this Passover occasion the Jewish people are once again oppressed, this time by the Romans who are in occupation of their land. The Roman occupying force led by Pontius Pilate would have been nervous every time a Passover came around. They distrusted gatherings and public crowds and would respond to keep stability. The Pharisees also distrusted crowds particularly when they couldn’t control them or they felt their actions would upset the Roman occupiers.
38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” 40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”
Palm Sunday is an opportunity to look to the immediate future and a time of anticipation of what
is coming. The fact that Jesus enters Jerusalem riding on a colt to the praise of the crowds recalls the
prophecy from Zechariah 9:9: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion, shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt the
foal of a donkey.”
When the crowds shout “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” The Pharisees become very nervous and tell Jesus to rebuke his disciples. Some Pharisees had warned Jesus in Luke 13:31 that Herod wanted to kill him and had advised Jesus to lay low. Now again some Pharisees implore Jesus to order his disciples to stop their subversive chant. The Pharisees know that the crowd’s actions may well bring down the wrath of those in power in Jerusalem, and upset the control and power that they have.
This response of the Pharisees doesn’t faze Jesus though, he tells them that if his disciples are silenced the stones will cry out. Jesus knows full well the opposition he faces, but he will not be deterred from his mission, the will of his Father.
Respond: As we approach Easter this year? What kind of Jesus will we proclaim in our local communities? Which Jesus will we preach and live out during this Passion season? Will we speak the truth of his words clearly and openly? Or will we allow the opposition of the day in whatever form it takes to silence His words. In this season between Palm Sunday and Easter, may we find the right words to proclaim the real Jesus. Otherwise, the “stones” may have to “shout out”!
Pray: Heavenly Father, you sent your Son Jesus Christ to be the Saviour of the world, yet many people have still not responded to his truth and love. Help me to be a true disciple of his and not to be silenced by the world around me. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Please continue to pray for all affected by the war in Ukraine. People have also been asking what else we can do to help the people of Ukraine. The Church of England has released the following guidance …
Please come and talk to either John or Laura Groom if you’d like more details or information. Please also pass on this opportunity to your friends and families who might be interested.
At present the single most productive thing you can donate is money to the charities that are already on the ground in Ukraine and bordering states. There are two safe and secure ways where your gift can support those most in need: The first is through the Disasters Emergency Committee’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal which is supported by a number of charities including Christian Aid, the ecumenical relief and development agency of the British and Irish churches. Your gift will help provide food, bedding and temporary accommodation for people who have fled the war in Ukraine.
The second is through the USPG-Diocese in Europe Emergency Appeal which is looking to support the front line work of chaplaincies across Europe as well as Christian charities carrying out humanitarian work both in Ukraine and responding to the arrival of refugees in neighbouring countries.
Please avoid organising charitable collection of toys, clothes and bedding as this is often inappropriate and not what is most needed.
