13th March 2022 Lent 2 All Saints Church, Childwall
Read Luke 13:31-35:
31 At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you.”32 He replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’ 33 In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day—for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem! 34 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. 35 Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
Reflect:
When Jesus set his face towards Jerusalem (Luke 9:51) he did so with a determination that would not be deflected or discouraged. In this passage we see some Pharasees warning him to leave the place where he was as Herod was hunting him to kill him. Jesus refused to be deflected from his destination and promised he would carry on with his work until he reached his goal, Jerusalem, where it would be completed. Jesus knew his destiny was to die in Jerusalem but he takes up a prophetic lament over that ancient “city of peace”, in this he shows his heart towards those who refuse him. He longs that Jerusalem would allow him to gather them under his wings but they would not let him, so, sadly judgement awaited them, on Palm Sunday he weeps for Jerusalem for the same reason. (Luke 19:41).

Jesus does not force himself on anyone, he offers the free gift of eternal life to everyone and we are free to
refuse, that is our choice but it has consequences. How do we react when those we love refuse Jesus’
offer? Do we lament and weep over their choice and pray that God will give them a change of heart?

Finally, please continue to pray for all affected by the war in Ukraine. Below is a suggested prayer from the Church of England
God of peace and justice,
We pray for the people of Ukraine today.
We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons.
We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow,
that your Spirit of comfort would draw near to them.
We pray for those with power over war or peace,
for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children, at-risk and in fear, that you would hold and protect them.
We pray in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen.
People have also been asking what else we can do to help the people of Ukraine. There are a number of organisations that are already either in Ukraine or neighbouring countries and are able to help very specifically with local needs. These include the Salvation Army, the DEC and the Transform Europe Network. Follow the links below to find out more.
