10th October 2021 – Harvest
  All Saints Church, Childwall

READ: Matthew 6 v25-33

25 ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?  28 ‘And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labour or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you – you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?” 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

REFLECT:

This weekend at All Saints we are celebrating our Harvest Festival.  It is the time of the year when we particularly give thanks to God for the provision of our food and all that we need to live.  In recent weeks we have been hearing regularly about different items of food that could possibly be in short supply in the future like Turkeys for Christmas.

Our reading this week tells us clearly not to worry about what we will eat or drink or about what we will wear.  We are reminded that in God’s eyes we are very valuable to him and that he knows what we need.

The problem is though that we often do get concerned and worried about those things that we need or think that we need.  Jesus challenges us to think, 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? We know that the answer to this question is no and yet we still continue to be worried about various things.  God knows what our everyday needs are to live and he doesn’t want us to be dependent on what we have but to be dependent on Him!  Jesus says, 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

At this time of Harvest, we do give thanks to God and we do give gifts of food to help those who need it.  God though doesn’t want us to give thanks just once a year and show our gratitude.  He wants us to seek first His kingdom every day of our lives.  The Foodbank that we are giving the food to that we receive this year isn’t just open at Harvest.  It operates 365 days a year and relies on many volunteers who give of their time freely so that people in need can benefit.  Imagine what would happen in our Parish of All Saints, or where you live and in our places of work and within our families if we all sought God’s kingdom first every day and did what he wants us to do!

RESPOND

What is the most generous act that anyone has ever done for you?  How did it make you feel?

What has God said to you from this passage and what challenges you the most?  My attitude to money or possessions?  Not to worry about my outward appearance?

When was the last time you prayed to God and asked him what he wanted you to do?  If you have never done that, then why not try and see what happens?

PRAY: Heavenly Father, thank you for all that I have.  Help me to be truly grateful and to respond to the needs of others.  Help me to seek daily your will for my life and help me to give my worries to you and leave them with you.  Through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.
