Sunday 20th December 2020 – Advent 4
All Saints Church, Childwall
READ: Luke 1.26-38 – In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you.” 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favour with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” 34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.” 38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.
REFLECT: As I read this well-known and much loved passage, once again, I am challenged afresh. When the Angel Gabriel appears to Mary he says, ‘Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you.’ How does Mary react? She is greatly troubled. The angel tells Mary not to be troubled and repeats that Mary has found favour with God. How? Why? We don’t know, but it’s interesting that she has found favour with God BEFORE she has done anything special, BEFORE she has said, ‘Yes!’ Similarly, Matthew 3 tells us that at Jesus’ baptism, by John in the River Jordan, a voice was heard from Heaven, ‘This is my beloved Son in Him I am well pleased.’ BEFORE Jesus had done anything special. Maybe Mary [and Jesus] are not ‘highly favoured’ [and ‘beloved’] because they obeyed God, but because God knew that they were willing to do so and say ‘Yes!’ to His call. An ongoing motif in Scripture is the idea that God sees the heart and calls people on the basis of the attitude of their heart towards Him e.g. David, the shepherd boy who became King of Israel. The angel goes on to explain that Mary will play a vital part in God’s plan of salvation by conceiving, carrying, giving birth to and nurturing a child who will be ‘great’ and be called ‘the Son of the Most High’, who will sit on ‘the throne of his father David’ and reign over ‘Jacob’s descendants forever’ in a never ending kingdom! Not surprisingly, Mary has a practical question; How? How can this possibly happen? The angel explains that this will be the work of God, the Holy Spirit. Mary says very little in this exchange other than to say that she is willing to accept God’s will for her life. It would be easy to romanticise the calling of Mary, focussing on the fact that she was ‘highly favoured’ of God, but we must also remember the potential and actual cost, to her, of her ‘Yes!’ to God. It’s always good to be reminded that God is not impressed by our ability [which will never be enough on its own no matter how able we may be], nor our religiousity[if that’s a word], but our availability and willingness to serve Him.
RESPOND: Many people [even Christian people] seem to think that their standing before God is based on their performance of religious duties, or in what they have done FOR Him. It is NOT! God loves us because He loves us because He loves us BUT, He does long for a response from us. You and I are not Mary. You and I will never be asked to do what Mary was asked to do, but the key issue is whether we, like Mary, are willing to play whatever part God may call us to play; are YOU available to God today and in the days ahead; will YOU respond to God’s call on your life in a way which will deepen your relationship with Him and, who knows, may have a wonderful impact on the world of our day?
PRAY: Post Communion Prayer for Advent 4 – Heavenly Father, who chose the Blessed Virgin Mary
to be the mother of the promised saviour: fill us your servants with your grace, that in all things we may embrace your holy will and with her rejoice in your salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
