JULY 2020 ECO CHALLENGES

No sane person would have wished Covid-19 on the world. But among the glimpses of a silver lining that have been observed as a side effect of major industrial countries ‘locking down’, has been the sharp fall in greenhouse gas emissions, more space for nature, and cleaner air for people and nature to breathe as air pollution has fallen. Even these small comforts however are in danger of being lost if governments and people do not move very fast to ‘build back better’ (A Rocha UK CEO, Andy Atkins)

  1. Look after wildlife in hot weather

Please take a moment to think how you might be able to help nature during hot weather: provide a shallow dish of water for thirsty birds, mammals and even insects (make sure you change this water daily); top up your bird feeder and scatter some tasty apple chunks for thrushes and other animals; provide a shady spot using rocks, stone slabs, tall grass for frogs, toads and newts seeking shelter from the sun; water your plants (from a rain barrel) and lastly, keep it a bit messy! Wilder areas can provide shelter for a wide range of wildlife (A Rocha UK)

  1. Actively seek out food that uses less packaging or none at all

Use your own containers at meat, cheese and fish counters and buy your bread from the fresh bakery section.
