Weekly sheet 17.10.21

17th October 2021                                                                                All Saints Church, Childwall

Read: Mark 10:35-45

35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. ‘Teacher,’ they said, ‘we want you to do for us whatever we ask.’  36 ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ he asked.  37 They replied, ‘Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.’  38 ‘You don’t know what you are asking,’ Jesus said. ‘Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptised with the baptism I am baptised with?’  39 ‘We can,’ they answered.  Jesus said to them, ‘You will drink the cup I drink and be baptised with the baptism I am baptised with, 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.’  41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42 Jesus called them together and said, ‘You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’

Reflect:

My P.E. teacher at school was a Welshman whose rallying cry was “what you need boys Is AMBITION” In today’s reading we learn about the ambition of two of Jesus’ disciples, James and John. Jesus and His disciples were on that long pilgrimage to Jerusalem part of a huge, growing, and excited crowd and they were just outside Jericho when the two brothers made their request “Grant that we might sit, one on each side of you when you enter your Kingdom.”

Jesus’ reply is in three parts:

1. Jesus reshapes their understanding of ambition. He speaks to them about the Baptism He is about to undergo and the cup He is to drink. These speak of the betrayal, rejection and death which await Him at Jerusalem. In short, Jesus remoulds ambition in the shape of the cross.

2. Jesus rebukes the usual understanding of ambition. The problem with our use of ambition is that we use it to gain authority and influence over other people, often at their expense. James and John thought that they would be the head of the group of disciples if Jesus would grant their request. This is also how the rest of the group understood it, hence their anger at the brothers.

3. Jesus refocuses ambition towards serving others.  Jesus is the pattern for this, as He came “not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life, a ransom for many.”  The focus of our ambition needs to be the good and wellbeing of others even if this costs us in loss of comfort and prestige.  James and John confidently asserted that they could follow Jesus in this and indeed they did, James was the first of the Apostles to be martyred while John experienced lifelong persecution and exile for following Him.

Respond:

This same call comes to us today, we need to bring our ambitions for all aspects of our life to the cross of Jesus and allow The Holy Spirit to rebuke, reshape, and refocus them in the light of his death and resurrection.

Pray: Let us learn how to serve

And in our lives enthrone Him

Each other’s lives to prefer

For it is Christ we’re serving. Amen
